| Why Challenge People to Come Into Maturity? by Angela Lougee Founder, Rhema Life Solutions Having lived and been an integral part of the body of Christ in three different continents, my heart is broken over the huge number of believers who have been saved for several years, but are still walking around in diapers and drinking milk, not even ready to transition to eating meat. Jesus revealed several secrets of the Kingdom to His disciples, but He had so much more to share with them. However, He couldn’t, because they could not handle it – they were still babes. He longed to feed them with the meat of the Kingdom, but all they could digest was the milk of the Word. (John 16:12-13) Several times Jesus expressed His frustration at the disciples’ slowness to understand or catch on to His ways. (Matthew 17:14-20, Luke 24:25-26) Since the days of Jesus’ earthly ministry, the harvest has been plentiful but the laborers have been few. (Matthew 9:37-38) You would think that the shortage of workers would have been a thing of the past after the day of Pentecost. Unfortunately not; the writer of Hebrews experienced the very same frustration Jesus faced – people who had come to faith long enough to be teachers were still needing to be taught the elementary truth of God’s word all over again! They had spent several years in the Kingdom, but were still running around in diapers, clinging to their bottles of milk. (Hebrews 5:11-14) How does this affect anything? Galatians 4:1 teaches that as long as the heir is a child he is no different from a slave; Jesus said that a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever! (John 8:35). Everyone is born into the Kingdom as a child in the things of God, but our heavenly Father expects us, by all means, to grow up. Jesus came that we may receive the full rights of sons, in this life and for eternity. (Galatians 4:4-5) The full rights are only given to those who come into maturity. Children couldn’t handle it, which is why the Father set guardians and trustees over them until they matured. (Galatians 4:2) Babies can only think of themselves; they believe the world revolves around them. They do not have in mind the plans or purposes of their parents. So, too, are infants in the Kingdom. They do not have in mind the priorities of God, but are rather preoccupied with the issues of men. That was who Peter the apostle was before he had his wake up call. Jesus told him point blank that he was a stumbling block. (Matthew 16:23) Believers who refuse to grow become stumbling blocks in the Kingdom. They are: Tossed around by all winds of doctrines, more prone to being offended and staying offended, and are most likely to become entry ports for strife, gossip and much more. Stunted growth usually results from rebellion or laziness – a refusal to deal with our flesh and make it subject to us. Either of these reasons, if left unchecked, will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay and cost you way more than you want to pay. It is a risk to refuse to grow, a risk not worth taking. Peter learned his lesson and in turn teaches us how not to remain an infant in the Kingdom. (2 Peter 1:5-9) WHY RECEIVE THE FULL RIGHTS OF THE SONS OF GOD? Granting us full rights as the sons of God, is the reason Jesus went to the cross. Adam walked in the full rights of the sons of God before the fall. But since the fall of man, creation has been waiting in eager expectation for the second Adam and His sons to be revealed. (Romans 8:19) Creation has been waiting for your manifestation; do you not know there is more to you than meets the eyes? Has it not yet dawned on you that you are in this world what Prince William and Andrew are to the United Kingdom? (1 Peter 2:9) Are you not aware that you are still here, alive after all the storms that should have taken you out because you are an ambassador representing the most dynamic, most powerful and indescribably awesome dynasty? (2 Corinthians 5:20) We need the full rights of the sons of God to finish the work God has committed to our hands. We also need it now as evidence that we are ready to be promoted to a higher responsibility, with its corresponding authority when the new heaven and the new earth is established. (Revelation 21:1-7) YOU WANT TO GO UP? GROW UP THEN! |
